In SEO, on-page optimization is one of the first things needed when moving content from “pen and paper” to your Website.
This process makes sure that you’ve dotted your i’s and crossed your t’s, so to speak, for all your Web page elements, making a well optimized page.
I’ve compiled a quick list of best practices to remember when completing on-page optimization.
- Use your keyword/phrase at least once in your Title and as close to the beginning as possible.
- Create a Title that attracts the user as the Title will appear as the first thing in the search results which will most likely be the first thing a searcher will see.
- Write a compelling Meta Description to entice users to click on your search result. This also appears in the search results underneath the page Title.
- Make use of short, descriptive URLs and place your keyword/phrase in them.
- Try to use your keyword/phrase in your first heading (H1) tag.
- Remember to include your keyword in your body copy 2 to 3 times for shorter pages, and 4 to 6 times on longer pages.
- Add your keyword/phrase into your image alt tags and in the names of the images, at least 1 per page.
- Bold your important keyword at least once.
- Italicise your keyword/phrase in your body copy.
- Link to your page from other pages with a good description in the link – use your keyword, duh!
- Use your keyword within the first 50 words on the page.
- Write great, link-worthy content that will attract interest.

Above all create a good experience for the visitor, make sure the page is informative, interesting and usable. This will encourage people to link to your site naturally.
